South Sea
pearls are the most expensive and exquisite kinds of pearls. The majority of
these pearls are farmed in the waters of the South Pacific, where large oysters
scientifically known as the Pinctada maxima are found. The cultivation
process consists of a nucleus being inserted into an oyster in order for the
oyster to excrete nacre to overlap the nucleus in layers--similar to cultured
pearls. As a matter of fact, South Sea pearls are "cultured," but
are not referred to as "cultured pearls" since the term is automatically
denotes the Japanese Akoya pearls.
The Pinctada oysters are cultivated in the farms for approximately twenty-four
to thirty months. The longer the cultivation period, the greater chance of facing
some kind of error. As a result, South Sea pearls are priced heavily. Nevertheless,
the thick nacre formed as a result of such cultivation results in pearls of
incomparable inner glow--the one factor that puts South Sea pearls above other
kinds of pearls.
